Asbestos Notification Letter
Dear Parents, Faculty and Staff:
Asbestos is an issue we have been dealing with for many years. The Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act of 1986 (referred to as AHERA), was enacted to determine the extent of, and develop solutions for, any problems schools may have with asbestos.
Asbestos has been used as a building material for many years. It is a naturally occurring mineral that is mined primarily in Canada, South Africa, and the USSR. Asbestos properties made it an ideal building material for insulating, sound absorption, decorative plasters, fireproofing, and a variety of miscellaneous uses. There have been over 3,000 different products in 1973, and most uses of asbestos products such as building materials were banned in 1978.
As required by AHERA a certified asbestos inspector and management planner inspected all facilities at Saint Mary Catholic School sampling, and rating the condition and hazard potential of materials in the school facilities suspected of containing asbestos. An asbestos management plan for the Saint Mary Catholic School was developed from the inspection and laboratory analysis records. Recently, the facilities were re-inspected to see that all aspects of the management plan are being carried out.
This notification letter, education and training of our employees, and a set of plans and procedures designed to minimize the disturbance of the ACM, and plans for regular Surveillance of the ACM are a part of our efforts to meet government regulations (AHERA).
A copy of the asbestos management plan is available for your inspection in the school office during regular office hours. Inquiries regarding the plan should be directed to:
